The annual Red Stocking Program is underway to provide Christmas gifts to children 12 and under in La Salle County.
First launched in 1923, Red Stocking raises money to buy Christmas gifts for families in need at The Times. Donations are used for toys, games, books and food items that go directly to children signed up by parents, relatives or friends. Funds are not used for administrative or personnel costs. All work related to the preparation and delivery of gifts is volunteer based.
Parents, relatives and friends can submit the names of children in need through Saturday, December 3. This deadline is strictly adhered to. To register children for gift delivery, fill out the Red Stocking Fund form with the family’s address, phone number, names of each child age 12 or younger, and gender.
The form is published in every other edition of The Times. This week it can be found on page 11 of the Tuesday 15 November edition and page 5 of the Thursday 17 November edition.
Forms may be mailed to Red Stocking, c/o The Times, 110 W. Jefferson St., Ottawa IL 61350 or delivered to the office during business hours of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Names will not be accepted by email or telephone.
The distribution of this year’s gifts will take place on Saturday, December 10. Volunteers deliver the gifts directly to the registered families’ homes. An adult must be present that morning to pick up the delivery.
Donations are not solicited door-to-door, but are delivered or mailed to The Times’ Ottawa office. To donate, cut out the Red Stocking Donor Information coupon regularly published in The Times and mail it along with a check to Red Stocking, c/o The Times, 110 W. Jefferson St., Ottawa, IL 61350 .
The names of all donors will be published in the newspaper in the future.
Red Stocking does not currently deliver gifts in the La Salle-Peru or Spring Valley region.
