Man hospitalized for mental health evaluation after barricading home

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The Fort Wayne Police Department helped transport a man to the hospital for a mental health evaluation following an hours-long standoff on the orders of an Allen County judge.

The man barricaded himself in a residence in the 3400 block of E. State Blvd. Thursday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. Fort Wayne police said he was believed to be armed with a knife.

The Crisis Response Team and the Emergency Services Team (EST) were called to the scene to help get the man out of the house. Police say: “Due to the nature of their work, these teams are equipped with additional tools that enable communications, intrusion, etc. that regular patrol units cannot access.”

After the man still refused to come out, surrounding homes were evacuated while negotiations continued. The EST agents eventually used a chemical in the house, but the man still refused to leave.

Then at around 10:15 p.m., EST officers broke into the apartment and took the man into custody. He was immediately taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
