Joyful scenes broke out in Ukraine’s southern city of Kherson as Ukrainian troops advanced through much of the city and surrounding area, apparently meeting little or no opposition as they recaptured the only regional capital captured by Russia this year.
Russian troops have retreated to the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, which cuts through the wider region known as Kherson, which was annexed by Russia in September in violation of international law.
The withdrawal is another setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin, and it marks the most significant military moment in the war since Ukrainian forces swept through the northern Kharkiv region in September.
