Kings offer support to Keegan Murray through Grandma’s health problems

Keegan Murray has been going through a rough patch in his personal life.

Murray’s father, Kenyon, revealed on Twitter that Murray’s grandmother suffered a stroke while present at the Kings’ 115–108 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on October 31.

“She could open her eyes these past few days,” Murray told NBC Sports California’s Kyle Draper and Matt Barnes on Sunday night after Sacramento’s victory over Golden State. “I know she’s watching now. I just want to perform for her. That’s what we did.

“We won, so I’m thankful for her to see this.”

Murray has only been with the Kings organization for a handful of months since he was the No. 4 overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft. His teammates make sure he is there for whatever he needs.

“We didn’t know at first, to be honest,” king guard Kevin Huerter said Sunday night on NBC Sports California. “It was a few games, we didn’t really know.

“Keegan is quiet at heart. When we found out we told them we were there for him. And if he needed time it was of course on him. We try to keep out of his business. He is a brother of ours , and we’re just trying to let him know we’re here for him.”

That’s the type of team culture coach Mike Brown is determined to establish in Sacramento.

Through the summer league, preseason and first 12 games of the regular season, Murray’s composure is undefeated. He has proven himself capable of shrugging off big nights and struggles and remain the same collected, efficient player through the next time out.

After starting the season hot, averaging 18.8 points while shooting 41.9 percent from deep, Murray endured the first speed bump of his NBA career, struggling to averages of 7.3 points and a field goal percentage of 34.7 in the next six games.

However, he rebounded in the win over the Warriors, recording 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, one of his career highs of 22.

The rookie’s NBA journey continues Tuesday night with a home game against the Brooklyn Nets.
