“Vika is always tough no matter what, especially on hard courts, especially in faster conditions. I lost to her the last few times, I knew it would be tough. set
I thought it was really important not to let her gain momentum or more confidence by winning an easy first set, so I’m definitely very happy with how I handled that situation. [Being] being able to win the first set and start strong in the second against someone as experienced as she is will always give me a lot of confidence,” Pegula said after defeating Azarenka.
After beating Azarenka, Pegula beat Maria Sakkari in the Guadalajara final and won her first WTA 1000 title.
