West Virginia is coming off a forgettable season in 2021-22. The Mountaineers went only 16-17 overall, with a 4-14 record in Big 12 games. That would leave the Mountaineers at the bottom of the standings. West Virginia ended up losing to Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament.

In his first action of the 2022-23 season against Mount St. Mary’s on Monday, West Virginia did very well. The Mountaineers had a 30-18 half-time lead and went on to win 76-58. Emmitt Matthews finished with 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the team.

On the Pittsburgh side, they didn’t do so well last season either. The Panthers went 11-21 overall with a 6-14 ACC record. This put the team ahead of only Georgia Tech and NC State in the standings. Pittsburgh dropped to Boston College in the ACC Tournament.

Pitt did very well in his first game of the year against TN-Martin. The Panthers scored 37 points in the first half and another 43 in the second for an 80-58 victory. Blake Hinson had 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead the way.

CHOICE: I’ll try Pittsburgh. This should be a pretty fun showdown anyway, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an ending close. Anyway, Pittsburgh managed to score 80 points in their first game this week, although they didn’t shoot very well (36.6%). The Panthers grabbed 51 rebounds (18 offensive) and provided 21 assists to bolster their efforts. As for West Virginia, they hit 49.1% of the field with 45 rebounds in their opening win. With both teams coming off solid efforts, this should be a fun showdown to watch.
