College basketball rankings: Purdue holds firm in the Top 25 and 1 as rookie stars shine in debuts

CBS sports chart

Curiosity time! What is the only team in the CBS Sports Top 25 and 1 daily college basketball ranking that did not open the season on Monday?

Answer: Pure.

The Boilermakers waited until Tuesday to start, for whatever reason. But just like every other Top 25 and 1 team, Purdue finally opened with a win over an outmatched opponent – an 84-53 victory over Milwaukee.

Rookie guards Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith had impressive debuts. They combined for 24 points, eight steals, seven assists and six rebounds. When asked at the postgame press conference what it was like to see two first-year point guards doing so well so early on, Purdue coach Matt Painter said: “It’s great. [they’re] good young players — [but] it is [still] hard to be good right away, even with someone who is talented. There’s just a big learning curve when you start. … But [Loyer and Smith] has many similarities. They can shoot the basketball. They can pass the basketball. They have a good feel for the game. So they call it right.”

Purdue is one of only two schools in the top 25 of the Top 25 and 1 that is also not in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. (The other is Texas A&M). Over the course of the offseason, many people asked me why I was ranking the Boilermakers, as they lost four of the team’s top seven scorers last season and didn’t add, relatively speaking, an announced draft class. My answer, consistently, has been that I only believe in Painter, who has guided Purdue to a top 25 on for seven straight seasons. He is almost always good, rarely less so, and therefore deserves the benefit of the doubt almost regardless of his cast. Simply put, I will always assume that Purdue will be good with Painter until this trend is stopped.

With a 31-point win on Tuesday night, the Boilermakers remain in 24th place in the Top 25 and 1st updated from Wednesday morning. His next game is Friday against Austin Peay.
